Applique Work
`Applique', which is a french term, means "applied" or "thing that has been applied". In broad sense, an applique is a smaller or larger design applied on another fabric. This textile art brought by some people during the partition of India-Pakistan in 1947 and today, some communities such as Rabari (the nomad animal herders), Kutch people of Gujarat, Rajasthan & Orissa women are keeping alive this art. In this work, there are two types of fabrics are used. First Upper fabric i.e. top fabric & lower fabric i.e basic fabric. Normally, Upper fabric's quality is thick than lower fabric. Top fabric to be cutted in desired The quality of upper fabric is generally cotton, polyester and quality of basic fabric is generally Organdy or Tarcosa fabric. Top fabric to be cutted in desired design and then its edges of the patches sewn by cotton thread & applying on basic fabric. It is also known as Katab work and this textile art is absolutely done by hand. This textile art consists cutting intricate floral design, animal, Geometrical, symmetrical and tree designs and normally is used in white-white fabric & some bright colors, means both colors of fabric is white & in bright colors : upper fabric is light shade & basic fabric is more dark shade & vice-versa in same colors. Among all, white-white fabric is very well-known to embellish in Hotels, Resorts & Home decoration in all over the world. Applique work is used mostly in soft furnishing products such as cushion cover, pillow cover, Bed spread, Curtain…etc and also in different Ladies Garments.
